A voice box (IPA , plural larynges), or voicebox, is an organ in the neck of mammals involved in protection of the trachea and sound production. A voice box houses a vocal cords, and is placed at a point in which a upper tract splits into a trachea and the esophagus.

Structure
A structure of the voice box is principally composed of cartilage bound by ligaments and muscle. At a front is the thyroid cartilage, creating the prominence of the Adam's apple in humans. A inferior horns (protrusions at a bottom tail of the thyroid cartilage) of the thyroid cartilage rest on a ring-circular gristle known as the cricoid cartilage which connects the voice box to the trachea. the cricoid gristle resembles a signet ring (narrow ahead, wide within back). Above a voice box is the hyoid bone, by which (via various muscles & ligaments) a voice box is attached to the jaw and skull. These muscles move a voice box when you took swallowing. A hyoid is the only swimming bone in the system; these are non 'bonded' to any more bones. A epiglottis is another cartilage that extents upwards behind a back of the tongue and projects down through the hyoid bone. It connects to a thyroid cartilage upright below a thyroid notch (the Adam's apple).

A space defined by these independent gristle may be divided about into a supraglottis at a top & the glottis.

A glottis is defined when a space between a vocal folds (other unremarkably called vocal cords), which are then placed at a upper rim of the cricoid gristle. It grab a thyroid cartilage at a front, & to the Arytenoid cartilages at the back. Which are actually deuce about tetrahedral gristle responsible pulling a vocal folds together & apart (adduction & abduction — understand Anatomical terms of location). A glottis is the laryngeal vicinity of virtually all interest to speech investigator, when these are widely believed to exist as in which virtually all of the control of phonation and pitch goes on. the vocal folds come muscular people coated by owning a mucous membrane which protects great deal of the respiratory tract from either foreign particles. Their inner edges contain a vocal ligament.

A supraglottis is that section of a voice box above the glottis. It contains a ventricle of a voice box (laryngeal sinus), a false vocal cord (or even false vocal folds), the epiglottis, and a aryepiglottal folds — two folds of connective tissue that attach a epiglottis to the arytenoid cartilages. Muscles in the aryepiglottal folds can pull a leaf-shaped epiglottis down, sealing a voice box & protecting the trachea below from foreign objects.

Function
In a period of ingesting a voice box (at the epiglottis and at the glottis) closes to cease swallowed poop typing a lungs, there is as well the heavy cough reflex to protect the lungs. Sensation is transferred per superior laryngeal nerve (glottis & supraglottis) and a recurrent laryngeal nerve (subglottis and muscles), two branches of the vagus nerve.

Piece articulation of a healthy (a ticket manipulation that creates the numbers of different vowel & consonant sounds of the globe's languages) is achieved per apply of the teeth, tongue, palate, and lips, sound is generated in the voice box, & that is in which pitch and volume are manipulated.

A vocal folds may be held approximate (by adducting a arytenoid cartilages), therefore that it vibrate (view phonation). A muscles tied to a arytenoid cartilages control the degree of opening.

Vocal stack length & tension may be controlled by rocking a thyroid cartilage forward and feebleminded on the cricoid cartilage, and by manipulating a tension of a muscles in the vocal folds. This is a causal agent of the pitch produced in the period of phonation to rise or fall.

Descended larynx

Inside virtually all animate being, including child man, a voice box is placed super high in a throat — a position that allows it to few other well by using the rhinal passages, therefore that respiration & feeding are non done using the equivalent apparatus. Nevertheless, a few aquatic mammals, large deer, and fully grown human being keep close at hand descended larynges. An full-grown man just can not raise a voice box plenty to directly few it to the rhinal passage.

the few linguists use at times suggested that a descended voice box, by extending a length of a vocal tract & thereby increasing the kind of sounds homo can green goods, was a critical element in the development of speech and language. Others cite a presence of descended larynges within non-linguistic creature, too when a omnipresence of nonverbal communication and language among humans, when counterevidence against this claim.
